Chemical engineering across R&D and manufacturing.

My work spans process scale-up, equipment design and commissioning, process optimisation and water treatment research. I have worked from laboratory and pilot systems through changes on a running production line.

Moving new process conditions into stable manufacturing

Tyvek® APX had to be scaled on an existing production line. Early trials exposed process instability, so the challenge was to learn quickly without putting routine production at unnecessary risk.

My work

I planned and ran industrial trials, analysed the link between process conditions and product properties, and worked with operations, quality, maintenance and safety on changes to the operating approach and equipment. The trial plan became more disciplined about stopping a test and returning to standard conditions when stability moved outside the acceptable range.

Outcome

That work helped move the APX conditions from unstable early runs into repeatable commercial production. It also gave the team a clearer operating window for later trials.

Reducing energy in a process recovery system

The opportunity was in the recovery section of an operating line, where energy demand, emissions and production requirements all had to be considered together.

My work

I examined distillation duty and reflux against the actual operating constraints, evaluated revised settings, and checked that the change could be implemented while maintaining process and product requirements.

Outcome

The revised operation delivered approximately €250,000 per year in estimated energy savings and further reduced already compliant process emissions.

Taking new equipment from technical need to operator handover

Experimental capability in a running plant requires more than a design that works on paper. The equipment must fit the available space, materials, safety requirements and daily operation.

My work

I defined technical requirements, selected materials, coordinated suppliers and procurement, and followed the work through installation and commissioning. I authored change documentation and contributed to design review, PHA, MIQA and PSSR activities, then prepared operating information and trained operators.

Outcome

New process and experimental equipment was brought into service with the documentation, safety review and practical handover needed for use on the line.

Testing water recovery for hydrogen-related processes

Water quality and recovery become important when process water is considered for reuse in electrolysis and hydrogen-production applications.

My work

At KIT I designed and operated pilot-scale treatment systems, including work on process-water recovery from Fischer–Tropsch systems. I defined configurations and operating strategies, monitored performance across changing conditions, and used the resulting data to understand system behaviour.

Outcome

The pilot work provided experimental evidence and operating insight for evaluating treatment and reuse routes. I also supervised MSc research within the programme.

Detecting fouling without opening a membrane system

Conventional performance signals can show that a membrane system is deteriorating without revealing where fouling is accumulating or what kind of material is involved.

My work

I led a roughly USD 200,000 development project from concept through experimental design and a working optical monitoring prototype. The approach used measurements from a test component to detect and characterise fouling while the wider process remained in operation.

Outcome

The team produced a working prototype and a published patent family. It grew out of a broader research programme combining membrane experiments, imaging and process modelling.
